Lets Talk Taboo Workshop

On Thursday 29th June NDAS hosted a full day event featuring guest talks, film screenings and drama performances around the topic of sexual exploitation and domestic abuse (DA).

The day featured an introduction from Dame Vera and guest speakers Marilyn Hawes from Enough Abuse and Andy Woodward, the first former footballer to have spoken out and disclosed details of abuse in football.

Throughout the day film and drama projects were performed which showcased the result of successful partnerships between both statutory and voluntary organisations and young people from across Northumberland. NDAS have collaborated with a range of creative partners in recent months. A key partnership has been with Open Clasp Theatre Company, with whom a series of Child Sexual Exploitation drama performances and workshops 'First Time Free' have been developed. These performances were held with Year 9 students in High Schools and community venues across Northumberland.

The Raw Productions film ‘Control’ which explores emotional abuse and which was launched on Valentine’s day this year featured in the event programme, as did the Little Big Butterfly Young Women’s Film Academy (YWFA) project that focuses on preventing unhealthy relationships -  a project which is part funded through Dame Vera Baird fund, The Community Foundation and Metro Radio Cash for Kids.

The afternoon provided an opportunity to highlight the success of the Strengthening Learning project developed by Northumbria Police, NCC and partners to develop and jointly deliver lesson plans for Year 10/11 students about CSE and DA in teenage relationships, and rape and consent.  Dame Vera was the Keynote speaker at the launch of this project in 2015 and there was a performance of the original drama ‘First Time Free’, it is fantastic how much the project has grown and developed since then.

NDAS would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the day, it was a fantastic success and a brilliant opportunity to celebrate recent achievements.
